Betfred Bookmaker

Betfred was established in 1967 by Mancunian brothers Fred and Peter Done when they opened their first 'Done Bookmakers' shop in Salford aged just 26 and 21 respectively. By 1997 they had expanded to 100 shops and they now have a retail estate of over 1300 shops (making it the UK's fourth largest betting chain) as well as being the official betting partner of the new Wembley National Stadium since 2006 - operating betting booths for all England and FA matches, including the FA Cup Final.

According to accounts filed in December 2011 by parent company Lightcatch Ltd, turnover for Done Brothers (Cash Betting) Ltd for the year to March 27 was £4.1billion, a 17% increase on the previous year. Although ownership is shared, Fred runs the Done Bookmakers empire which was re-branded to Betfred in 2004 when the business launched it's website, in part to exploit Fred's big personality - working on the theory that punters love taking on a real person as opposed to a faceless corporation. Fred's face appears frequently and prominently in promotional material and his adverts are as direct as the man himself , selling a no-nonsense, opinionated, come and have a bet style.

In 1998, Done gained notoriety for paying out early on Manchester United winning the Premier League title, only to see Arsenal pip United by a point, reportedly costing him £500,000 and after the 2004/05 Premier League season he paid £1 million to fellow bookmaker Victor Chandler, after he bet that amount that Manchester United would finish higher than Chelsea (who actually finished 18 points ahead of United).Clearly not learning his lesson, Fred again paid out early on all bets on Manchester United to win the league (with seven games still to play) in the 2011/12 season, but Manchester City finished as champions.

More about Betfred

Fred named one of his racehorses The Bonus King - the nickname used in his betting shops and website to describe him and his policy of offering extra payouts on multiple bets. Betfred are also an innovative bookmaker, as demonstrated by the introduction of the highly popular 'Goals Galore' coupon in August 2009, where punters have to choose five games where they think both teams will score - up to £1m is bet on that coupon each week, forcing his rivals to copy the idea.

In 2011 the UK government announced that, following a six-month auction process, Betfred had won the race to acquire the state-owned Tote betting group, for a fee of £265 million. "I love racing and I believe we have the greatest in the world," said Done, who added that buying the Tote had been his ambition for years. "Over the coming months I will develop the Tote's relationship with the sport into a highly successful commercial partnership." As part of the transaction, Betfred was awarded an exclusive seven year licence to operate pools betting on UK racecourses and is acquiring the Tote's 517 shops, to marry with their existing estate of over 800 shops.

As a result, the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup, feature race at the prestigious Cheltenham Festival, was renamed The Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup and Fred said that sponsoring the race was "one of the proudest moments of my career."

The change, which marked Betfred's first sponsorship at Cheltenham, followed the renaming of three of the Tote's flagship Flat races: the Ebor, Cambridgeshire and Cesarewitch.

The Betfred Ebor is the most valuable handicap run in Europe with a total prize fund of £210,000, which was first run on the Knavesmire in 1843 and was first sponsored by the Tote back in 1976. The Betfred Ebor is the feature race on the final day of the four-day 'Welcome To Yorkshire Ebor Festival' in August, which also features the Betfred Melrose Stakes on the final day.

The Betfred Cambridgeshire and Betfred Cesarewitch were both founded in 1839 and the two events, both run at Newmarket's Rowley Mile racecourse (in September and October resepectively), have since come to be known as the 'Autumn Double'. Betfred offer a £100,000 bonus to any stable that wins both legs of the historic double (split so that the trainer receives £50,000 and the yard's staff share the remaining £50,000).

Other race sponsorships include every race on Aintree's Betfred Old Roan Chase Day in October, with the feature race the Grade 2 Betfred Monet's Garden Old Roan Chase and including others such as the Betfred Goals Galore Handicap Hurdle, the Betfred 1350 Shops Nationwide Novice's Handicap Hurdle and the Betfred The Bonus King Handicap Chase.

They also sponsor Nottingham, Sheffield and Kinsley dog tracks and two prestigious events at Nottingham, the Betfred Select Stakes and the Betfred Eclipse.

Betfred Website

Betfred.com was recently re-launched and has a stylish new look complemented by a strong colour scheme. Visitors to the homepage are immediately met by crystal clear graphics displayed in large carousel banners detailing the latest offers and promotions from Betfred's range of online products.

Exploring further, players will discover the option to personalise the layout of the various games and promotions on offer, with the ability to toggle between grid and carousel views, adding a personal touch and saving all-important playing time. This is just one of several key changes made to the overall layout and navigational structure of the website to improve usability, with product-specific promotions pages and a new step-by-step lottery betting process. With the re-branding of the Cheltenham Gold Cup as the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup, they also added a betfredcheltenhamgoldcup micro-site with information, schedules and news leading up to their showpiece sponsored event.

A particularly nice feature of the website is their 'Football Predictor' which shows a pie chart for each game with the probability of results and scores based on statistical analysis. It also lists relevant stats and data for each team to help you in deciding which bets to place.

In 2013, they also launched a 'Premier League Centre', combining stats, previews of every game and breaking news, including info on injuries, head to heads and more.

There is also a very slick 'Interactive Racecard' section, which has all the daily racecards with a predictor for each race, along with a wealth of information on each racecourse, statistics, results, 'steamers' (what's being backed) and 'travellers' (which horses are making a long journey for a specific race).

For those looking for a gambling fix between real events, there's a 'virtual' tab in the site top menu offering 24/7 virtual horse-racing, greyhounds, motor-racing, speedway and football.

If you ever need help, the site also offers live chat functionality so that you can chat online to a Betfred representative without having to call or email.
